Addictive Kanban Simulation is an exciting workshop to try Kanban practices while developing useful software for Martian enthusiasts using paper, pens and scissors. During the game each group will have a chance to design Kanban board from the scratch, define explicit rules and set WIP limits. We will try couple of roles. Martian Stakeholder will be responsible for generating and prioritizing business requests. Kanban Facilitator will collect useful statistics and metrics in order to keep team focused on improving their process. During the game we will have a chance to collaboratively improve the process, remove some wastes, revisit explicit rules and reduce WIP limits. After the game part we are going to have a 10 minutes wrap-up session for discussing what we have learned about Kanban. Additionally, all participants will have a chance to try and evaluate paper prototype testing technique.

Martian Kanban is based on the paper prototyping technique.

(20 minutes) Introduction and overview of the Kanban practices

(80 minutes) Kanban game

(20 minutes) Wrap-up

Learning Outcomes:

  • What is Kanban board? At the beginning of the workshop we will investigate elements of the Kanban board and how Kanban board can evolve over the time. During the game we will try theory on practice and each group will have a chance to create their own Kanban board.
  • What is Explicit Rules? We will investigate what is Explicit Rules, how they should be created and used. During game part each group will design their own set of rules.
  • We will explore how WIP limits are working on practice. Also we will try to reduce amount WIP by tweaking WIP limits.
  • Overview Lean wastes and during the game will try to find some.
  • Have a practice with paper prototype testing technique.
  • For Practicing and Advanced level this workshop can be useful to explore good ideas for their own Kanban trainings.

Session History

I have facilitated this workshop in my company with english speaking groups. In general I've got more positive feedbacks to this game comparing to Kanban Pizza or Kanban Lego.
